The total package … including floors

POULSBO — Much has changed since Brock and Nancy Baker began selling floor coverings out of a 300-square-foot space on Lindvig Way in April 1995. Now with a building of their own, the Bakers and their business, Brock’s Interiors, have grown with the North End community they serve, but some things haven’t changed. “We’ve kept all of the things that have made us a success,” Brock Baker said. “Just because we’ve got a new building doesn’t mean we’ve raised our prices.”

Having the 10,000-square-foot showroom has allowed the company to add some higher end products, but it has allowed for the expansion of several affordable lines of carpets and other floor coverings as well, he said.

“Our goal is for people to realize we are here and see what we have to offer,” Baker said.

In addition to offering a plethora of floor coverings ranging from wear-resistant carpets to high-fashion tiles, there are two things that set Brock’s apart from the its competition in Kitsap County, Baker said.

“We do 90 percent of our installations, and our design consultants don’t work on commission,” he said.

Instead of concentrating on making a sale, Baker said design consultants are encouraged to work for what’s best for each customer.

“Our goal is to help the customer get the ultimate, total package,” he said.

That package includes matching floor coverings with paints and other room decor to ensure that the product matches the need and look for each individual, he said.

As part of that commitment to excellence, Brock’s offers a free half-hour individual consultation to assist in the search for all the essentials of the perfect look, and for a nominal fee, lengthier consultations are available, Baker said.

Consultants will even make onsite visits to offer advice on the different options available, he said.

When it comes to installations, Baker said few floor covering retailers have their own installation service, but Brock’s does.

“It allows us to control the quality and if we’re behind on a job, we can shift staff accordingly,” he said.

Brock’s installers also receive industry and manufacturer training, so they are leaders in their respective specialties, he said.

For some, the growth from a 300-square-foot space to a 10,000-square-foot space and into a new building in 12 years might create a bit of complacency, but not for Baker.

“My biggest push now is to perfect the services we offer and become the leader in our industry in the county,” he said.
