New NKSD board members sworn in

The newly elected members of the North Kitsap School District were sworn into their positions by Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson during the district’s Dec. 12 meeting.

Mike Desmond, Breane Martinez, and Nancy Moffatt are all new faces to the board while Cindy Webster Martinson returned to her position after winning a very tight race.

Before swearing in each newly elected member, Erickson took the time to recognize the importance of the service that the school board members have signed up to perform.

“The amount of public service that you will do as a board member is huge,” Erickson said. “It’s a lot of work, its a huge amount of responsibility and I am really proud of every one of you that stepped up to help the community in such an important way. Strong public schools are the spine of our community, without strong, vibrant, healthy schools we are lost.”

Once all the new members were sworn in, the board held its own election for board president, vice president and legislative representative as well as appointed liaisons to the communities of Poulsbo and Kingston, the sovereign nations of the Suquamish and Port Gamble S’Klallam and to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA).

Webster-Martinson was elected president, Rick Eckert was elected vice president and Nancy Moffatt was elected as the legislative representative.

In addition to their duties as NKSD board president and vice president, Webster-Martinson and Eckhert will also maintain their roles as the liaisons to the Tribes and the City of Poulsbo respectively.

Desmond volunteered and was appointed to be the liaison to the WIAA and Martinez also volunteered and was appointed as liaison for Kingston.

The newly formed NKSD board then went about its regular business for the evening before adjourning and reconvening for a presentation at Kingston High School as part of the school connections portion of the meeting.
