League swimming roundup: CK’s Sanchez wins two SSC titles; Kitsap swimmers rack up more postseason times

TACOMA — Central Kitsap senior James Sanchez won two South Sound Conference titles at Saturday’s league meet, setting a new meet record time in the 200-yard individual medley in the process.

Sanchez swam the 200 IM in 1 minute, 59.92 seconds, a 3A state qualifying time, and held off Peninsula freshman Hunter Hobbs to capture the league title. Later in the meet, he took home victory in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.85, which is also a state time.

Joseph Sandoval took fifth in the 50 free (24.05) and sixth in the 100-yard butterfly (59.62). Ethan Hutton finished sixth in the 100 back (1:03.25)

Local teams pick up more postseason times at Last Chance Meet

Olympic League teams gathered at the Olympic Aquatic Center on Saturday for the league’s annual Last Chance Meet, which serves as a final opportunity for swimmers and relays to qualify for the postseason. The district meet, which will be held Feb. 14-15 at Hazen High School, can also be used to qualify for state.

A pair of 200-yard medley relays picked up district times. Olympic’s “B” relay of Atlee Ferris, Miles Cole, Stanley Leong and Zach Wyant finished first with a time of 2:09.79. Right behind in second was North Kitsap’s foursome of Logan Magallon, Luke Halla, Andrew Parry and Joey Florent (2:13.91).

Rowan Powell of North Kitsap scored a district time in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:29.06. Fellow Viking Mac MacKinnon swam a district time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.73).

Kingston’s Zawadi Leon and Evan Yamane both got district times in the 100 free (57.19) and 500-yard freestyle (5:58.62) respectively.

Olympic’s Warrick Bottai swam a 1:11 flat in the 100-yard backstroke to qualify for the district meet.

South Kitsap finishes fourth at SPSL meet

Wolves divers took the top two spots in the diving competition at the South Puget Sound League meet as the team finished fourth overall. Connor Twiss and Blake Baldschun finished first and second respectively.

The 200-yard medley relay of Andrew Carlos, David Bidus, Charlie Moore and Ethan Conrad took fourth, as did the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Conrad, Cole Smith, Carlos and Moore.
